Is this president’s idea of draining the swamp?
Is there another Teapot Dome in the making? In the upside-down world of today’s American politics, it’s deja vu all over again with a $300 million no-bid contract to rebuild the electric grid in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico awarded to the neighbor of Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke.
Not since Warren G. Harding’s Secretary of Interior Albert Bacon Fall accepted a no-bid contract for the Teapot Dome strategic oil storage has there been such a blatant sweetheart deal given to a political crony of a sitting interior secretary. On Sunday, after objections from the governor of Puerto Rico, the contract was canceled. The FBI is now investigating.
The company, Whitefish Energy, at the time the hurricane hit Puerto Rico had only two full-time employees. It looks like Trump and Zinke are competing to one-up Harding and Fall in the political pantheon of the most corrupt political officials in this country’s 240-year history. So much for draining the swamp.
