At least two Western New York dental practices will allow kids who get candy for Halloween the chance to turn it in for cash.
Dr. Michael Foley and his staff at Winning Smiles Pediatric Dentistry invite children and schools to exchange their Halloween candy for $1 per pound from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at offices at 205 Linwood Ave., 3476 Sheridan Drive, Amherst, or 3364 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park.
The Growing Smiles Pediatric & Adolescent Dentistry office at 6501 Transit Road, East Amherst, will offer the same deal from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. The office will swap up to 5 pounds of candy for cash.
These practices hope to collectively gather more than 6,000 pounds of candy, which will be sent in care packages to members of the Armed Forces.
Children bringing in their haul to Winning Smiles also will be invited to enjoy entertainment, create cards for the troops, win prizes, and meet servicemen and women displaying their military vehicles, weather permitting.
They’ll get a free toothbrush, too.
“Excessive sugar consumption in children is associated with childhood obesity, hyperactivity, diabetes, cavities and more severe dental issues,” said Dr. Michael Foley, of Winning Smiles. “This candy buy-back program is a win for everyone, helping children make responsible decisions about their health, all while helping and supporting our brave soldiers overseas.”
