A wrist injury suffered just prior to Anaheim Ducks training camp had left Ryan Miller on the sidelines for most of the first month of the season, unable to contribute to his new team.
Miller finally got his chance Sunday in Carolina and made the most of his opportunity to give starter John Gibson a breather.
Miller made 34 saves -- including all nine shots he faced in overtime – and then went 3 for 3 in a shootout as Anaheim got a skills-contest goal from Corey Perry to beat Carolina, 4-3.
“I was happy to just get going,” said Miller, who is the NHL's all-time leader in shootout victories among goalies with 58. “I’ve been nervous and anxious for a month now. I wanted to just get going. Get moving with the team and start contributing.”
Here's Miller's shootout-clinching save. Note how he heads over to the boards to scoop up the puck as a souvenir.
Former Sabres center Derek Grant got his third goal of the season for the Ducks and third in the last five games. Grant had gone the first 92 games of his NHL career without a goal, including 40 last season with the Sabres, before scoring twice Oct. 20 against Montreal.
