The driver of a semi-truck lost control of his vehicle and struck three other vehicles Friday, forcing the shutdown of Route 394 in the Town of Poland, Chautauqua County Sheriff's deputies said.
The accident occurred about 1:10 p.m. at the intersection on Waterboro Hill Road.
Nicholas G. Hettenbaugh 21, of Kennedy was driving a farm semi-truck carrying silage when the truck's engine shut off, causing the brakes to malfunction, deputies said Hettenbaugh told them. As he went through the intersection, Hettenbaugh attempted to turn right onto Route 394, but his truck over-turned as he entered the road and struck three other vehicles that were traveling east on Route 394.
No injuries were reported from the collision but Route 394 was shut down for about four hours while emergency crews cleaned up the roadway and spillage.
Hettenbaugh was issued traffic tickets for failure to stop at a stop sign, operating a vehicle out of the license class that he is permitted to drive and having inadequate brakes.
Hettenbaugh is scheduled to appear in Poland Court to answer the charges at a later date. Chautauqua County Sheriff deputies were assisted on scene by Chautauqua County Hazmat and local fire departments.
