It’s early and it was only for bragging rights, but businessman Ian Golden of Tompkins County emerged as winner of a weekend straw poll among Democrats lining up to challenge Republican Rep. Tom Reed of the 23rd Congressional District next year.
Golden captured 30 percent of the vote at the Saturday survey of Democrats gathering in Randolph. Attorney Eddie Sundquist of Chautauqua County gained 26 percent; college administrator Tracy Mitrano of Yates County, 24 percent; and Air Force retiree and attorney Max Della Pia of Tioga County, 14 percent.
The remaining candidates received less than 10 percent and included teacher Rick Gallant of Steuben County, actor JG Hertzler of Tompkins County, economist educator Charles Whalen of Ontario County, and Pastor Karl Warrington of Ontario County.
The event was organized by Democratic Chairmen Frank Puglisi of Cattaraugus County, Mike McCormick of Allegany County, and Norman P. Green of Chautauqua County. They said nearly 200 Democrats participated representing all 11 counties in the congressional district.
