DEC accepts public comments on Lockport quarry expansion plan

The state Department of Environmental Conservation will accept public comments on a planned 243-acre expansion of a rock quarry in the Town of Lockport through mid-November.

The DEC announced last Thursday it accepted Lafarge North America's completed application of its draft environmental impact statement for project, which involves substantial excavation on a new site site south of Hinman Road and across from its existing quarry.

The DEC opened a 30-day public comment period on the proposed expansion, plus a reclamation plan to create two lakes at the quarry with opportunities for recreation and wildlife habitat.

The expansion would allow the mining company to operate in Lockport for the next 40 years.
