Letter: Diversity in educators shouldn’t be main goal

Diversity in educators shouldn’t be main goal

The Oct. 17 News story regarding the lack of diversity in the countywide teaching ranks was indeed an eye-opener. According to the article, “advocates argue that minority teachers may better understand the cultural and racial backgrounds students bring with them into the classroom, which can lead to improved academic performance.”

While it has been a long time since I have been in the classroom, as far as I knew mathematics, sciences, grammar, foreign languages and writing had no race or cultural bias. A good teacher is a good teacher, regardless of race, sex or cultural background.

The guiding principle of our school system is the education of our young people. Diversity in educators, while a noble goal, should not be the overriding mission of any school district.
