Police doing 'double duty' caring for Craig Lehner's K-9 dog Shield

Officer Craig Lehner's K-9 dog, who had been waiting inside his air-conditioned patrol car when Lehner disappeared into the Niagara River Friday, gnawed on a chew toy inside Buffalo Police Headquarters Wednesday.

Lt. Sal Losi, who heads the Buffalo Police K-9 unit, said the 85-pound German shepherd has a quirky sense of humor, just like his human partner.

"He embodies the spirit of Craig," Losi said.

Lehner, whose body was found in the river Tuesday after five days of intensive searching, was close to Shield, Losi said.

"It seems they were inseparable," Losi said.

They would often be seen together at the K-9 training center, even on their off days. Lehner was paired up with Shield about a year ago.

Shield will be evaluated to determine whether he can be partnered with another officer or put up for adoption, Losi said.

In the meantime, Losi and other K-9 officers were doing what they could to keep the dog calm.

"We're all doing-double duty" keeping Shield active and comforted, Losi said.
