It's a bold, but simple, plan: Steal an Amazon package and pass it off as your own.
Buffalo police say Andrew Betancur tried to pull off this scheme, and it was working until 12:15 p.m. Sunday. That's when Peter J. Massicci, a probationary officer, said he saw him on Delaware Avenue near West Tupper Street opening an Amazon package.
Massicci asked if it was his. Betancur said it was and his name was "Tim," like on the package.
Then Massicci asked to see Betancur's ID.
Uh, oh. The gig was up. "It was learned the defendant's name was not, in fact, 'Tim,' " the arrest report reads.
It turns out the owner – actual name, Tim – had left the package in a mail drop box on Delaware Avenue.
Betancur, of Genesee Street, is charged with petit larceny and possession of stolen property, police said.
A charge of failure to come up with a better cover story is pending.
