Don was born March 31, 1934 in Huron, NY, the son of Peter Henry Johnson and Laura Kalbfleisch Johnson. He worked as a Waterfront Director for the Boy Scouts and enjoyed swimming at Sodus Point. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1952 after captaining the Varsity Basketball Team to its undefeated season as starting Center. After graduation, Don joined the Navy as a machinist mate and traveled the world, spending a good bit of time on the USS WASP aircraft carrier. After honorable discharge in 1956, he attended Auburn Community College, and then transferred to Michigan State University earning his BA in Production Administration. On June 24, 1961, he wed Elaine Kent in Auburn, eventually purchasing a home in Hamburg, NY where together they raised 3 boys and lived happily for 50 years. He earned his real estate license and ran his own business, D&E Maintenance, Inc., from 1978 until his retirement in 2001. He took his boys on backpacking and family camping trips, played tennis and golf, went cross-country skiing, and took daily walks with his wife. Don was a member of the Hamburg Jaycees, coached his sons in Little League Football, and volunteered his time for Meals on Wheels and Christian Service Brigade for Boys. Don was an active member of the Wesleyan Church of Hamburg for over 40 years, instilling in his family the importance of regular family worship. Primarily through Elaine's influence, he put his faith in Christ and his family witnessed the changes wrought in him over the years as he read the Bible and grew in his faith. Following Elaine's death after 55 years of marriage, Don moved to Shippensburg, PA to be near family, living out the last year of his life.
