Aldi is planning to remodel and expand its decade-old store on Transit Road in East Amherst, featuring more fresh food, a modern design and use of green building materials.
The company is seeking permission for a 2,960-square-foot expansion of its 15,400-square-foot store at 9290-9300 Transit Road, between Casey and Muegel roads. The project will result in the loss of 11 parking spaces, leaving 160 spaces used by both Aldi and a neighboring CVS pharmacy.
The remodel would include enhanced produce, dairy and bakery sections; open ceilings and natural lighting; and use of recycled materials and LED lighting.
The work is part of Aldi's $1.6 billion program to improve more than 1,300 American stores by 2020, said Aaron Sumida, Aldi's Tully division vice president.
The Amherst Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the project on Thursday. If approved, work could be finished by summer 2018.
