Oct. 13, 2013 – The Buffalo Bills went through quite a few quarterbacks in certain years of their history, including the 2013 season.
EJ Manuel was one of them, but injuries kept him out of the lineup at times. That gave an opportunity to a little-known backup by the name of Thad Lewis. And he almost took full advantage of it.
Lewis took the field as the starter when the Bills hosted the Cincinnati Bengals, and they were quite good. The Bengals were headed to an 11-5 season that year.
The Bengals got the lead up to 24-10 early in the fourth quarter, and most of the Bills’ fans expected the game to end with a similar score. But Lewis wasn’t done yet, as he threw two touchdown passes to send the game to overtime.
Sadly, the Cinderella story ended there. Mike Nugent’s 44-yard field goal won the game for Cincinnati in overtime. Lewis’ NFL career ended after that season.
