Ten-thousand dollars in proceeds from Erie County's annual in rem property auction may have been stolen.
Attorneys who run the auction for the county filed a complaint with Buffalo police following the Sept. 28 auction in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
Jennifer C. Persico, a partner with Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman, said Tuesday there was a "discrepancy" in the accounting from the day's sales that's being investigated by the firm. There was supposed to be $434,700 in revenue, but only $424,700 was present at the end of the day, according to the police report.
While the law firm is fully insured to cover such a theft, the police report was filed "in an abundance of caution" while the matter is sorted out, Persico said.
