Kevin Porter picked quite a way to celebrate his 100th game playing for the Rochester Americans.
The captain scored an unassisted goal just 39 seconds into overtime, as the Amerks completed a home-and-home series sweep of Syracuse with a 3-2 win at War Memorial Arena in Syracuse on Saturday.
Rochester opened their 62nd American Hockey League season on Friday night with a 3-1 home win over the Crunch. Williamsville native Justin Bailey had two goals.
Amerks forward C.J. Smith opened the scoring on Saturday with a power-play goal with 9:33 left in the first period. Taylor Fedun and Zach Redmond assisted on Smith’s first professional goal.
Canisius grad Cory Conacher, Syracuse’s top point-getter from a year ago, scored 5 minutes later to even the score at 1-1 heading into the first break.
Kyle Criscuolo put the Amerks back up by one 1:49 into the second period. Smith picked up his second point of the night with an assist.
The Crunch tied things up again with 8:09 left in the third period on a goal by Kevin Lynch.
Goalie Adam Wilcox made 24 saves for the Amerks in his first start of the season after Linus Ullmark stopped 28 of 29 shots in the season-opener.
Both teams struggled on the power play for the second night in a row. They combined to go one-for-10 Saturday, while they went one-for-11 on Friday night.
With the win, Rochester has already matched the amount of points it had against Syracuse last season, when it won only two of 10 games against the defending Eastern Conference champs.
The Amerks start a three-game homestand next Friday when they host Utica. Charlotte and Uitca then visit Blue Cross Arena on Oct. 20 and 21, respectively. All three games start at 7:05 p.m.
