Homeroom Announcements: Thursday's big games & more

Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Thursday

1. Girls volleyball - Lancaster at Orchard Park, 6 p.m.

No. 3 large school Lancaster heads to No. 4 Orchard Park in a big ECIC I matchup.

The Legends have two losses in the league, both to Clarence, the second of which came in a sweep against the Red Devils on Tuesday. Julia Kurowski, Katie Becht and Kate Kozak are a three of the top players for Lancaster.

Orchard Park lost at Lancaster in four sets on Sept. 11 and at Clarence on Sept. 19. Setter Liz Chow leads a balanced offense that features hitters Abby Ryan, Sadie Joba and Kate Hennessey, among other.

2. Boys volleyball - Lockport at North Tonawanda, 5 p.m.

No. 1 Lockport (9-0, 6-0) visits fellow Niagara Frontier League unbeaten North Tonawanda (7-1, 7-0).

The Lions have tournament wins at Clarence and Sweet Home and have yet to drop a set in any match this season, which includes a nonleague win against No. 4 Frontier.

The Lumberjacks have only dropped two sets in league play this season, one to Niagara Wheatfield and another to Grand Island. Their lone loss came to No. 3 Canisius in a sweep on Sept. 13.

3. Girls volleyball - Williamsville East at Williamsville South, 6:30 p.m.

No. 2 Williamsville East (7-2, 7-0) and crosstown rival No. 7 Williamsville South (7-4, 6-2) do battle in an ECIC II contest.

The Flames haven't dropped a set in league play and have losses at No. 1 small school St. Mary's of Lancaster and No. 1 large school Clarence last week. Ally Jozwiak had 24 kills and Makayla Greenfield 32 assists led East Tuesday to a sweep of Sweet Home.

Aside from the loss to East, the Billies lost at No. 5 Hamburg on Tuesday to split the season series with the Bulldogs. Megan Muehlbauer and Amari DeBerry are two of the top players for South.

4. Girls volleyball - Mount St. Mary at St. Mary's of Lancaster, 6 p.m.

No. 1 small school St. Mary's (9-0, 7-0) looks to stay perfect in Monsignor Martin play when it hosts No. 8 Mount St. Mary (10-2, 5-1).

The Lancers swept Mount St. Mary at its place last Tuesday by set scores of 25-6, 25-21 and 25-21. This past weekend, St. Mary's came in third place of the 40-team Victor Tournament

The Thunder's other loss this season came in a four-set match against No. 8 large school Niagara Wheatfield. They swept No. 9 small school Sacred Heart back on Sept. 15. Those two teams look like they're battling it out for second place in the MMHSAA behind St. Mary's.

5. Football - West Seneca West at Lake Shore, 6:30 p.m.

The only football game on Thursday's Week Six schedule features Class A South teams West Seneca West (5-0, 4-0) and Lake Shore (1-4, 0-4).

Behind the throwing arm and legs of UB-commit Matt Myers, the Indians have been averaging 45.6 points per game, and that's with Myers taking a seat late in blowouts. The defense has been equally as impressive giving up only 8.8 points per game. That's an average margin of victory of more than 36 points.

The Eagles have lost four in a row since opening with a nonleague win against Eden/North Collins. That includes a loss on a last-second Hail Mary at Hamburg in Week Three.
