Marriage is option for all who are willing to commit
Wow! I was not aware that because I am married I am privileged. But based on Claire Cain Miller’s article, “How did marriage become the mark of privilege?” I guess I am.
By definition, privilege is “a special right, advantage or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.” But last I looked, getting married is a choice that requires no special right or immunity. It does require commitment and that is free to anyone willing to make it.
Miller’s premise is that low income and unemployment are creating this divide, a rather contemptuous suggestion. My parents and grandparents were married 50-plus years and had very little in the way of material possessions. What they did have was enduring love through good times and bad. They expected less and got more.
