Comedy on Tap: John Witherspoon, Barrel of Laughs and Babeville

There are plenty of laughs to be found locally during the first full week of October. Here are our best bets:

For decades, comedian and entertainer John Witherspoon has been a familiar face on stage, television and films. He’s well known for his role as Ice Cube’s father in the “Friday” film comedy series, and has also appeared in the films “Boomerang” and “Hollywood Shuffle.” On television, Witherspoon performed on various series including “Good Times,” “Amen,” “The Wayans Bros.” and “The Tracy Morgan Show.” Witherspoon has six performances Oct. 5-8 at Helium Comedy Club. For the past few months, the Seneca Niagara Casino has turned its Bear’s Den over to comedy on the first Thursday of the month with its Barrel of Laughs show. The next show, 8 p.m. Oct. 5, features comedians Jon Rudnitsky and Dino Archie. Rudnitsky is a former cast member of “Saturday Night Live,” performing on the show in 2015-16, and was named one of the “New Faces” at Montreal’s “Just for Laughs” festival. Archie was also chosen as one of “Just for Laughs” new talents and has appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and Comedy Central. Tickets are $20. Info:

Kevin Thomas Jr. rounds up the gang once again for “Laugh and Other Drugs,” a showcase night held at the 9th Ward in Babeville at 8 p.m. Oct. 5. Thomas has taken over producing and hosting this bi-monthly show after he won Helium’s “Buffalo’s Funniest Person” contest in 2016. This month’s show also includes local comedians Chris Hasenauer, John Lockwood, Gian Misso, Chris Plumer, Brandon Trusso and Jesse Winterhalter. Ticketsare $8 in advance and $12 at the door. Info:
