Average Joe's tavern in Amherst to close

Average Joe's tavern on Sweet Home Road in Amherst will close to make way for townhomes.

The bar and restaurant at 2350 Sweet Home that opened in 2004 would close for good once the planned development receives its necessary approvals and construction is set to begin, likely in the spring, said Chris DeBernardis, one of three co-owners.

RAS Development plans to build 50 townhomes total at 2350 and neighboring 2360 Sweet Home, just north of North Ellicott Creek Road, where the company has spent nine months working to gain approval for a previously announced project. The Average Joe's property became available more recently, said attorney Sean Hopkins.

RAS would construct three, one-story buildings on the 1.74-acre 2350 Sweet Home site, which requires a zoning change, said Ellen Kost, an associate town planner.
