Marine warning, beach hazards issued for Lake Erie shoreline

The National Weather Service reported that a severe thunderstorm with high winds and the potential for waterspouts is closing in on the Lake Erie shoreline between Westfield and Dunkirk.

It issued a special marine warning cautioning boaters in the area that waterspouts could overturn their boats and strong wind and wave action could damage them.

The weather service also posted a beach hazards statement for Chautauqua and Erie counties through Saturday morning.

Strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions are expected.

"This means life-threatening waves and currents are expected," the weather service statement said.

It advised the public to stay away from piers and breakwalls.
