Letter: Perhaps it’s time to stop playing anthem at games

Perhaps it’s time to stop playing anthem at games

I believe President Trump has foot-in-mouth disease, but I also believe he is correct that those who disrespect the American flag should be re-educated.

Being of an age where we were taught by our fathers and mothers returning from World War II that the flag is not just a flag, it is the life of someone who gave his all for us and must be respected. We were taught this not only by our parents, but by the entire community.

Over the years, the few have managed to take much from the many. For example, we no longer have God in public places and “Merry Christmas” has become “Happy Holidays.” The Confederate statues are being removed and even though I believe the South was wrong, I also believe these statues are a piece of our history and we need them to remind us of the past, so the future can be better.

Now perhaps the best thing to do would be to take the anthem away from sporting venues. Sports is just entertainment, like going to the movies or a concert, and you don’t see the anthem played there. So even though playing the anthem at games seems as American as apple pie, I would rather see it gone than see the flag and all it represents shown disrespect.
