Fall golf feels more like summer as Byrncliff celebrates 50 years

Buffalo’s September heat wave has given everyone a second chance at summer – especially golfers. And for year-round golf resorts like Byrncliff Golf Resort and Banquets (2357 Humphrey Road in Varysburg), the weather is pumping up business at a time when things usually wind down.

The resort has a full-service bar and restaurant along with a hotel and hosts fall events like free Civil War Living History Days Oct. 6-8. Then Byrncliff, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, turns its attention to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and sledding. Lindsay Eddy, whose grandfather started Byrncliff, took time to talk food, beer and recreation.

Question: How does this heat wave impact you at Byrncliff?

Eddy: This is definitely a gift to golfers for sure. They can get in last-minute rounds before the snow flies and this is great weather to do that. We’ll keep going. We’ve golfed in every month of the year. As long as there’s no snow, we put the flags in.

Q: Then your focus will change to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. How do you embrace winter sports?

A: We have 12 miles of trails for skiers through the woods and the golf course. We have almost 500 acres of property – it’s absolutely beautiful. We have groomed trails and lighted trails at night. We have the whole package.

Q: You also feature a full-service restaurant. What menu items are most popular?

A: All of the Buffalo favorites like a great fish fry, chicken wings, beef on weck. We do a burger special on Mondays, crab legs on Wednesdays, and all year-long prime rib on Saturday, and Sunday brunch – that’s a big one. We have homemade Belgian waffles, an omelet station plus pancakes and hot entrees with a full brunch line and salad bar.

Q: What do golfers like to drink on the 19th hole?

A: Definitely cold beer. We have lots of inventory, local and domestic bottles and draft like 42 North - craft brews are a very popular item.

Q: How does it feel to carry on your family tradition at the resort?

A: It’s amazing how much we’ve grown since my grandfather started and my parents took over. It used to be farmland. It’s an amazing transformation from what it was. And now myself and my husband are involved so it’s rewarding to carry this on for my grandfather. He would be really proud of where we are today.

Q: For golfers or even visitors who want to take a ride in the country as the leaves change, how would you describe Byrncliff?

A: I think it really goes back to the tagline: a true escape from the everyday. It is an escape, off the beaten path in a country setting. It’s beautiful. You head over the hills of Wyoming County and we’re nestled in the valley along 20A.

It’s a beautiful golf course and it’s very inviting with welcoming staff and beautiful scenery. The other piece of the business is banquets. We host everything from weddings and golf outings to showers, parties and anniversaries. We do it all.

Q: Are you taking any guesses as to how long you’ll offer golf this year?

A: Absolutely as long as we can. If snow does fly, bring on the snow because we’re ready for it and we enjoy the change of seasons. Then, in March, when we hit the end of winter, the faster the snow can melt the better because we’re ready to go.
