The Sabres dress in KeyBank Center and walk over to HarborCenter with most of their gear on for practice, usually using the tunnel in the arena pavilion that connects the two facilities. Ryan O'Reilly has made the quick jaunt even easier – by converting his hockey skates to roller skates with clip-on wheels.
"I remember seeing these a few years back. I saw some kid flying around them and I was thinking, 'I've got to get one of these,'" a smiling O'Reilly said after Wednesday morning's first practice. "Since we're always dressing in our room and coming over here, it makes it so much easier. "
O'Reilly said he doesn't like tying his skates while already in full equipment, as many players do once they get to HarborCenter. The wheels simply slip over the skate and attach to the back, much like a standard rubber skate guard.
"I like to tie them as one of my first things and I was thinking this could work out perfect,' he said. "I love them. We've got a bunch more pairs ordered for the boys. We can have a whole roller team."
