Canisius got the first goal, by senior Taylor Kugler in the 10th minute, but Marist overcame that for a 2-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over the Griffs on Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.
Kugler's goal came after she was able to settle a loose ball in the box and redirect it past Marist goalkeeper Makala Foley. Three minutes later Brianna Robinson tied it for Marist and the Red Foxes took the lead for good in the 28th minute on the first collegiate goal by freshman Jillian Colucci.
"Tonight, we came out of the gate pretty strong, but then [Marist] picked up the tempo and they got the goal back right away and continued to play harder than we did," said Canisius coach Todd Clark. "Overall, it was a tough day getting consistent results out of all 11 of the players that happen to be on the field at that time."
Niagara evened its MAAC women's soccer record at 1-1 with a 2-0 victory over Manhattan in Lewiston. Courtney Betts scored in the 45th minute on a cross from Bayley Sullivan to get the Purple Eagles on the board. Sophie Connor headed in a goal off the crossbar in the 68th minute on a cross into the box by Breanne Guervara. Shania van Nuland made four saves for the shutout boosting Niagara to 5-3-1 overall. It was the MAAC opener for Manhattan (2-5-1 overall).
