Passed peacefully with family by his side on June 28, 2017 in Naples, FL. Ray was born on July 18, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, son of Raymond and
Gertrude (Sayles) Van Deventer. Ray participated in sports in college and high school; he took great pride that he pitched at Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He served in the Active Naval Reserves. He was a graduate of SUNY State Teachers College at Brockport in 1950 with a BS, and received both his MS and SEA at the University of Buffalo (SUNY at Buffalo). Ray began his career as a teacher in Amagansett, NY. He was later the principal at Colonial Village Elementary and then Assistant Superintendent of schools in Niagara Wheatfield, Sanborn, NY. He retired in 1986. Ray was a volunteer fire policeman in Sanborn. In addition to many professional organizations, he also was an active member of the United Methodist Church and Habitat for Humanity. Ray and Diane retired to Naples, FL in 1992. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Diane (nee Hopkins); daughters Linda Haag (Carl) and Kathy Chandler (Howard); eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother Allan, sister Diane Pentz; sisters-in-law Linda McGrath and Dorothy Kelly; and many nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by his son John in 2001. A memorial service was held in Naples, FL. A reception in honor of Ray will be
held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the Sanborn Fire Hall, 5811 Buffalo St. from 3-5pm. Donations in Ray's memory may be made to the Parkinson Association of Southwest Florida, 5926 Premier Way #114, Naples, FL 34109 or VITAS Hospice, 4980 N Tamiami Trail #102, Naples, FL 34103.
