Orchard Park's Jim Smith enjoyed the comforts of his home course and tied the record for widest margin of victory in the New York State Golf Association's 22nd Super Senior Amateur championship.
Smith concluded his victory march Thursday at Crag Burn in East Aurora by carding his third straight 72 to finish the three-round tournament at even-par 216. His nine-strole victory tied the mark for widest margin of victory set in 2001 by Coville Windsor when the tournament was at Niagara Falls Country Club.
“It was a good field with a lot of good players," he said in a press release. "It’s certainly an honor to win twice. It’s a huge advantage playing at your home course. I grew up at Brookfield Country Club (last year’s venue), so it had a home course feel as well.”
John Hamilton of Hudson National was the runner-up.
In the 61st Seniors Championship, David Prowler of Bethpage State Park Golf Club on Long Island finished strong in capturing the title, firing his second straight 72 to finish with a three-round score of three-over-par 219. Entering the day leading by one stroke, he finished ahead of runner-up Stu Harris of Locust Hill by four shots. Last year's champion Paul Pratico fired a 74 ad finished at 10-over 226.
