Defending champion Jim Smith of Orchard Park shot a second straight even-par 72 on his home course Wednesday and will take a three-stroke lead into today's final round of the New York State Golf Association's 22nd Super Senior Amateur championship at Crag Burn Golf Club in East Aurora.
Smith had one birdie and one bogey Wednesday in his round of steady golf. He birdied No. 3 for the second day in a row and bogeyed No. 10 for the second day, too. The Super Seniors played a par-72, 6,147 yard layout. Seniors played to 6,521 yards.
Robert Zeman of Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club shot 74 for a 147 total to move into second place. Frank Broderick of Crag Burn, who was the 2013 State Senior champion, is tied for third with 74-74-148. Craig McIntyre (Transit Valley) and Woody Arnold (Park CC) are tied for fifth at 75-74-149 each.
David Prowler of the Bethpage State Park Golf Club on Long Island leads the 61st Senior Championship by one stroke after he shot even par 72 Wednesday for a 147 total. Dennis Lynch of the Nassau Players Club is second at 74-74-148.
Two strokes back is first-round leader Glenn Stopera of the NYSGA eClub-Capital District with 72-77-149. Closest to the lead among Western New York entrants are Mark Conomos (Crag Burn), Robert Dewitt (Transit Valley) and John Miosi (Brookfield) all at 152. Miosi shot 74 in the second round.
