Comptroller turns whistleblower hotline into bedbug hotline

Erie County employees who suspect wrongdoing by other staff members have been encouraged over the years to call or email the Whistleblower Hotline in the Comptroller's Office.

Now Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw is expanding the hotline, 858-7722, for employees who want to confidentially report office bedbug sightings and concerns.

The information will be shared with county exterminators.

Bedbug sightings at the Rath Building have been prevalent, particularly on Social Services floors. Mychajliw accused the county administration of "covering this up," though the county has spent thousands of dollars and sent emails to staff regarding ongoing pesticide treatments and new policies to deter the blood-sucking parasites.

“I understand why this problem is being dragged out and why employees are afraid to speak up," Mychajliw said. "I saw firsthand how poorly my employees were treated by the administration when we found bugs in our office.”
