Demolition work began last week for the construction of a new, larger Dash’s supermarket in North Buffalo.
The new 47,550-square-foot, $12 million store will be located at 1764 Hertel Ave., just west of the existing store, on the northeast corner of the intersection with Starin Avenue.
On Thursday, the city’s Preservation Board approved the demolition of several buildings to allow the project to move forward. They included a house at 279 Starin Ave., a two-story commercial building at 1736-1744 Hertel Ave., a shuttered doctor’s office at 1748 Hertel Ave., and the current Dash’s market at 1764 Hertel Ave.
The new store will replace the 94-year-old company’s oldest existing store.
“There is a lot of support for them,” said board member Richard Lippes. “Significant variances were granted from the Green Code, and … I don’t think the board should stand in the way of the project.”
