Geneseo High School freshman fatally struck by vehicle

A Geneseo High School freshman was fatally struck Thursday in an accident on Route 39, according to the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office continued an investigation into the incident on Friday.

Claire Allen, 14, was fatally struck at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday while running with a teammate during cross country practice, according to the Geneseo Central School District.

The Sheriff's Office identified the driver of the vehicle as Holly Mullen, 51, of Geneseo.

The Sheriff's Office said a preliminary investigation showed the victim was running northbound on Route 39, or Avon Geneseo Road. The girl was on the west side shoulder, running in the opposite direction of traffic, when she and her running partner attempted to cross the road and return to Geneseo High School, about a mile away. She had entered the southbound lane of Route 39 when she was struck, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office had ruled out cell phone use and driver impairment as possible causes of the accident, authorities said. No charges had been filed.
