What They Said: HC McDermott, WR Matthews

Head Coach Sean McDermott

Q: What did you see from Shady [LeSean McCoy] in practice?

A: What I saw, you really want to know? Yeah, he got a little bit ill at practice. Maybe he didn’t like the play call, I don’t know.

Q: So he was here before, then left practice? Or he came out after?

A: He was here at the beginning, then felt ill a little bit there, then came back.

Q: Have you talked to him since? Do you feel like he’s okay now?

A: Yeah, I saw him dancing around, it looked like he was good. He had a good practice.

Q: There’s really no question in your mind about Sunday for him?

A: Not at this point.

Q: Who picked up the majority of the number two reps, or at least how would you go about that if he wasn’t available to go today?

A: Yeah, Mike [Tolbert] and Taiwan [Jones] did a good job in there.

Q: Cordy Glenn mentioned something yesterday about managing his reps. If he starts, is he a full on go for the full game, or is that something where you’re going to have to mix Dion Dawkins in there?

A: Well we’re going to look at it. Just with every player, we look at managing reps as you get guys acclimated to full speed and into a full game.

WR Jordan Matthews

Q: Pretty happy to be at this point, after being forced to wait as long as you did?

A: Yes, definitely. It’s a good thing just to be back out there with the guys practicing, making plays, and building that confidence with everyone. It’s so different from sitting out and watching. Sure, you can take mental reps, but you still feel like you’re on an island by yourself. But when you actually get to be in the huddle, going through plays, going through the walk-through’s, meetings, everything as one unit with the guys, definitely more of a sense of calmness when I’m out there because I feel like I’m more part of the team.

Q: I know you said that the first day, you wore that little protective device, Tyrod [Taylor] drilled you in the chest with the ball, are you going to need a similar kind of hit on Sunday, to maybe not think about it anymore?

A: I don’t think I ever need a hit. I’ll be fine, trust me. Once I get into a football game, I’m locked into the ball, I play the game within the game. My whole job is to go out there, get open and catch the ball. I’m not really worried about anything like that. I’ve played with injuries way more significant than this before, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be fine.

Q: Tyrod told us yesterday that you and he are working to make up for lost time, so to speak, the couple of practices he missed, you not being full-go, where do you guys feel you’re on with respect to that spectrum?

A: I think we’ve been doing good, as far as building comradery with the quarterback. This is going into my fourth year [where] I’ve never had the same quarterback two years in a row. It’s something that I’m used to, it’s something that’s made me as detailed as possible. My biggest thing I lean on, [is] what kind of quarterback am I with. I’m with a great quarterback in Tyrod, he’s a Pro Bowl guy, easily the most athletic quarterback I’ve played with in my whole career, so I’m really excited about that, the opportunity to extend plays, extend drives. As far as getting acclimated to him, it’s been pretty easy. He’s a great quarterback, knows where to find you on the field. Then, he’s playing to my strengths, he knows the routes I’m really good at, he’s watched film on me, from when I was with the Eagles. He’s confident in me going out there, so I’m ready to get out there and play with him.

Q: You mentioned his [Taylor] athleticism, I’m guessing this is something that you’re going to have to learn on the job, just the way he can extend plays and how you’re going to have to maybe keep working for him, so to speak, maybe a little bit longer than you’re used to?

A: Definitely, him and Shady [LeSean McCoy], they’ll keep you awake at night just because there are no plays off. You run a route down field, Tyrod has the ability to break the pocket and extend the plays. You have to be able to say, okay I need to get open now, it’s the play within the play. With Shady too, if you think you’re on the backside and you don’t have to block your corner, that dude will cut it back at any moment. It’s always being on high alert, being in shape, and being ready to play with these guys, so I’m excited about it.
