We cannot remain silent about disparaging events
One of my favorite quotes is “If you don’t stand for something, you fall for anything.” I’m not sure who coined it, but it resonates for me, especially now. With so much in the news today regarding hate speech, flagrant displays of racism, misogyny, bigotry and anti-Semitism, it is time for all of us who care about the people in our communities to let these events serve as a call to action.
Maybe it is a small act of kindness to one less fortunate, or giving money to a local charity, or helping a new American, or getting more active politically, or just paying it forward. Standing up to those who want to disparage or scapegoat others takes courage and conviction. Silence only encourages the oppressors to take advantage and victimize the targets of their hate.
As Americans, we need to look into the mirror and see what kind of country we want it to be. Let your acts be small or large, but stand up for what you believe in. I pray I will stand up when challenged, and I believe that time is now.
