Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.
What to watch for Wednesday
1. Soccer - Clarence Tournament
Some reigning sectional champions will partake in the two-day Clarence Tournament, which starts with a pair of boys and girls games today.
- I-Prep/Grover vs. St. Joe's, 3 p.m.
- Clarence vs. Nichols, 5 p.m.
The Presidents graduated more than half of their starters from last season's squad that captured the overall Class B championship. Senior Abdullahi Hussein, an All-WNY small schools selection, will be counted on to spark the offense. The Marauders have 15 seniors on their roster, including All-WNY first teamer Spencer Frome, one of the best defenders in the area.
Reigning Class AA champ and host Clarence lost all four of its players who made an All-WNY team last year but do return its leading scorer in junior Ross Showalter. The Vikings are on the upswing after a 2016 turnaround.
- Clarence vs. Nardin, 3 p.m.
- Grand Island vs. Nichols, 5 p.m.
The Red Devils are attempting to make it back to the NYSPHSAA semifinals, where they've fallen short the last three seasons. Emma Faso and Elise Williams will move up into important roles for the Red Devils. Nardin is the defending Monsignor Martin Association champion. Olivia Jerge, Allyson Evoniuk and Jane Zugarek should be important players after the Gators lost nine seniors.
Grand Island, last year's Class A champ, lost Co-Player of the Year Madisyn Pezzino but do return All-WNY first teamer Alexa Chiarenza, a junior, and seniors Grace Stranahan and Sara Bykowicz. Nichols has plenty of talent back in Maren Geiger, Sophie Gordon, Camryn Warren and Marisa Warren.
The action continues on Thursday with the following matchups:
- Clarence vs. St. Joe's, 3 p.m.
- I-Prep/Grover vs. Nichols, 5 p.m.
- Clarence vs. Grand Island, 3 p.m.
- Nichols vs. Nardin, 5 p.m.
2. Girls volleyball - Southwestern at Portville, 6:30 p.m.
In its first season moving up from Class D, Portville was the only team to take a set from Eden during its Class C postseason run to an eighth straight state title.
Several key players return for the Panthers, including All-WNY selections Beth Miller and Sydney Colligan, and all-league players Sierra Keim and Haley Unverdorben. Miller, Colligan and Unverdorben played on the team that won the Class D state title in 2015.
