Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association capsules & schedules: Timon, Canisius, Cardinal O'Hara, St. Francis, St. Joe's St. Mary's

Bishop Timon-St. Jude Tigers (5-6)

Coach: Joe Licata, first season

Home field: Tifft Farm

Program founded: 1948

Outlook: The goal of the Tigers is simple. Put in the work to improve as the season progresses under first-time coach Joe Licata. Pride will be a huge motivating factor for Timon, which will be without several key members from last season who are now at different schools. Among those returning are senior tackle Jonathan Stachowski, who is 6-foot-4, 300 pounds, and junior Connor Dean. Joe Rozeski returns at receiver. Iroquois transfer Mitchell Theal will be quarterback. Jordan Hill will be a do-everything type of player on offense. Timon will play eight games after making some late changes to its original schedule released last spring. Ex-scholastic standouts T.J. Scamurra (Williamsville South) and Sean Mulhern (Riverside/St. Joe's) are Timon assistants.

Canisius Crusaders (10-2)

Coach: Rich Robbins, seventh season

Home field: Stransky Complex

Program founded: 1913

Outlook: The reigning state Catholic champions play six of their nine games on the road, including a contest at Bishop McDevitt. The Pennsylvania power, the alma mater of Bills running back LeSean McCoy, has averaged 12.6 wins the past five seasons. Canisius looks to burn teams with its speed, led by receiver Paul Woods. The Rutgers commit is a proven big-game player (nine catches for 179 yards and three TDs in the state final). The backfield includes dual-threat quarterback Jayce Johnson (18 total touchdowns in 2016), along with speedy running back Kenyatta Huston. Both are seniors. Huston, who has been clocked in the 40 at 4.3 seconds, scored 10 TDs last year. Receiver/defensive back Keenan Ollison and linemen Brad Currell and Will McGennis are among many key players on the Crusaders.

Cardinal O'Hara Hawks (1-9)

Coach: Shaquille Dudley, second season

Home field: no name

Program founded: 1963

Outlook: The Hawks took their lumps last year but have 25 returnees looking for some payback. Expect good things from junior two-way lineman Stephen Boyd. The 6-3, 290-pounder is a returning first-team All-Catholic. He's a disruptive pass rusher and captain of the offensive line. Defense appears to be a strength for O'Hara, as senior Michon Dudley is another a long, lanky rusher who also blocks the edge well as a tight end. Remir Velasquez started as a sophomore at linebacker last year, leading the Hawks in tackles. Nasir Benton moves from quarterback to receiver, while junior C.J. Masters takes over as quarterback after starting the team's final three games last year. He worked with local quarterback guru Jim Kubiak during the offseason.

St. Francis Red Raiders (4-6)

Coach: Jerry Smith, 29th season

Home field: Polian Family Field

Program founded: 1947

Outlook: For the first time in years, the signal caller isn't Jerry Hickson, as Western New York's career passing yards leader is now in college. Junior Dawson Tyger shifts from running back/receiver to quarterback. His job will be to get the ball into the hands of several playmakers, including returning second-team All-WNY pick Retsen Daley (867 receiving yards, nine TDs). Senior Melique Straker is another receiving target, along with senior captain Connor Miller. Cole O'Connor and Brian Edgerton share the running duties now that 2016 Connolly Cup finalist Dylan McDuffie is at Sweet Home. Returning linemen Jadd Dolegala and Grayson Myers welcome a few transfers – 6-3, 340-pound sophomore Eric Schon, classmate Jack Lauer and 6-1 335-pound junior Austin Hill.

St. Joseph's Marauders (4-7)

Coach: Derek Landri, second season

Home field: Robert T. Scott Complex

Program founded: 1897

Outlook: The goal according to Landri is for the team to play as hard as it can with a commitment to accountability. The Marauders have several talented players led by returning starting quarterback Casey Kelly. The junior is coming off a second team All-Catholic campaign. In addition to being able to throw a nice deep ball, he showed the ability to burn teams  via the run. Lining up in the backfield with him is classmate Jaden Loften, an explosive, toug- to-tackle tailback who averaged around 7.0 yards per carry and also is a receiving threat. Junior wideout Ky Michael Clark is another downfield target. Anchoring the offensive line is senior Cam Dabill, a smart, technically sound player who's one of the strongest kids on the team.

St. Mary's Lancers (1-9)

Coach: Chris Dickson, second season

Home field: Father Columban Brady Field

Program founded: 1941

Outlook: The Lancers were a young team that endured lots of growing pains and losses during Dickson's first season. They hope to change that around with sophomore C.J. Ozolins and Derek Johnson leading the charge on offense from the running back position. Ozolins, a potential 1,000-yard rusher, is coming off a fine season in which he made an impact at defensive end. Ja'Shawn Collins returns but moves from receiver to quarterback. He's also expected to see some time on defense at safety. Linebacker/receiver James Miller is one of three seniors on the team -- last season there were two -- and should be a major contributor. This is the first time St. Mary's has had a head coach enter his second season since Dave Hersey's tenure (2010-13). The Lancers will be the No 6 seed in the postseason since they are only playing a partial league schedule.
