Car smashed to pieces after hauler strikes Route 400 overpass, closing Transit

A tractor-trailer that was hauling cars Monday struck the Route 400 overpass on Transit Road in Elma, which resulted in the closure of the northbound lane of Transit Road, a spokesman for the Erie County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident happened just after noon, according to John Greenan, chief of administrative services at the Sheriff's Office.

The car hauler was traveling north on Transit when it hit the Route 400 overpass, damaging a section of the bridge and causing one of the unoccupied vehicles to fall off the semitrailer. No injuries were reported.

The Blossom Fire Department was dispatched to the scene because of leaking gas from one of the vehicles.

Greenan said the Department of Transportation sent engineers to survey damage to the bridge. The tractor-trailer was extricated from the bridge, he said.

The northbound lane of Transit Road remained closed at 4:30 p.m. It was expected to be reopened within a few hours.
