Wilson woman charged with violating Leandra's Law

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A Wilson woman was charged with violating Leandra’s Law after her car was stopped Sunday afternoon on Stone Road near Sunset Drive, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies said that an 8-year-old boy was a passenger in the vehicle operated by Melinda J. Major, 61, proprietor of Jean’s Bar & Grill in Wilson. Child Protective Services was notified.

She was pulled over after a motorist called about 2:15 p.m. to report a reckless driver on Sunset Drive. Deputies said that she was interviewed and found to be intoxicated.

She was additionally charged with endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, disorderly conduct and consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle on a highway.

Major was taken to Niagara County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail. She is scheduled to appear Sept. 5 in Lockport Town Court.
