Unusual response leads to DWI arrest

LEWISTON — Niagara County sheriff’s deputies charged a Niagara Falls man with drunken driving Thursday night after he made an unexpected response during a field sobriety test.

Officers said that when they asked Vincent M. Mameli, 66, of 77th Street, to put his arms out to the side, he put his hands behind his back as if he expected to be handcuffed.

Deputies stopped Mameli on Tuscarora Road shortly before midnight and had noticed that his vehicle’s inspection sticker had expired nearly four months ago. They said he failed some field sobriety tests and refused to submit to a roadside breath test, then was instructed to put his arms out to the side.
