Store employees foil theft of $3,000 in merchandise

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A pair of would-be thieves fled empty-handed Wednesday after attempting to steal nearly $3,000 worth of merchandise from the Home Depot store on South Transit Road, Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said. Store employees told police it was their second such attempt in three days.

According to reports, the pair entered the store shortly after 6 p.m., filled two shopping carts with goods and attempted to walk out without paying. When confronted by store employees, the pair fled to a dark-colored Ford Explorer parked nearby, and drove off. Deputies said that the license plate on the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier in Erie County.

Employees recovered all the merchandise. They described one of the men as about 6-foot-6 and weighing more than 300 pounds, with light facial hair. He wore jeans and a black shirt. The other man was described as 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds.
