Motorcyclist killed in crash with deer early Sunday in Orleans County

A Lyndonville man was killed when his motorcycle struck a deer early Sunday in the Town of Carlton, the Orleans County Sheriff's Office said.

The fatal crash took place just before 6:30 a.m. when William M. Carpenter III was traveling east on Route 279, known as Gaines Waterport Road in that area. After Carpenter hit the deer, the motorcycle skidded about 200 feet on its side, and Carpenter was thrown from the bike, according to the Sheriff's Office.

County Coroner Rocky Sidari pronounced Carpenter dead at the scene.

A sheriff's dispatcher said no supervisor was available Sunday afternoon to provide additional information on the crash.

The (Batavia) Daily News reported that Carpenter was 60 and was killed while on his way to work at the Orleans Correctional Facility in Albion.

The Daily News noted this is the second unexpected death to strike the Carpenter family in four years. William Carpenter's son, Zachary, who was 30, was shot to death in New Orleans in 2013, according to the Times-Picayune.
