Buffalo school administrators last year went to Puerto Rico in search of bilingual teachers. They returned with nine.
Now the district wants to introduce the newly arrived teachers to the community..
The certified teachers will be placed in various schools to build upon students’ native languages, while also developing their English skills. The expected outcome is that all students in bilingual programs will leave school fully bilingual and biliterate.
The recruiting process began last year, when the school district’s associate superintendent for Human Resources traveled to Puerto Rico to search for bilingual teachers. The district then set up online registration for one-on-one interviews with bilingual teachers in Puerto Rico. District principals were able to Skype with the candidates. The end result was the hiring of nine teachers who have relocated to Buffalo.
The meet-and-greet reception will take place 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Herman Badillo Bilingual Academy 76.
