Letter: Trump is wrong to place Founders alongside traitors

Trump is wrong to place Founders alongside traitors

Calls for the removal of Civil War statues honoring Confederate soldiers provoked President Trump to wonder if statues of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson would be next to fall because these men had slaves.

But these patriots honored our nation with their service; Washington by defeating the British, Jefferson by penning the Declaration of Independence. Those who fought for the Confederacy dishonored our nation by seeking to destroy it. Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart and their like were traitors to their country.

It is disheartening that so many Americans persist in viewing these rebels against their own nation as heroes, and shocking that the president would equate them with two of our Founding Fathers.
