People Inc. and a team of developers will start work next week on the construction of an 84-unit, mixed-income apartment project on Jefferson Avenue.
The apartments at 1162 Jefferson Ave. will feature two buildings with 66 one-bedroom units and 18 two-bedroom apartments, aimed at families with incomes ranging between 30 percent and 130 percent of the area's median income. Up to 16 units may be reserved for people with developmental disabilities who can still live independently.
The one-bedroom units will have about 625 square feet, while the two-bedroom apartments will have about 850 square feet. The apartments will have private patios or balconies, in addition to community open spaces and shared kitchenettes, laundry and exercise facilities in each of the three-story buildings.
There will also be bicycle racks and a public art element, as well as 97 parking spaces. And there will be commercial or retail areas, with 8,300 square feet of "flex" space in one building and 14,500 square feet in the other, divided into nine units.
The $20 million project will be is located on 2.4 acres just north of the Johnnie B. Wiley Amateur Sports Pavilion. Officials expect to finance the project through a combination of state, federal, private and foundation sources, including tax-exempt bonds and credits. Construction is expected to finish by summer 2018.
