Elia’s decision to remove Paladino was morally correct
It’s well documented there’s no love lost between The Buffalo News and teachers, the Taylor Law, the Buffalo Teachers Federation and New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
With that said, The Buffalo News editorial, “Wrong Decision,” on Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia’s decision to remove Carl Paladino from the Buffalo Board of Education, was wrong. Plain and simple, he broke the law. Paladino took an oath to this effect when he was sworn in as a board member. Had Commissioner Elia ruled otherwise, she would have opened a can of worms that would have dreadful consequences with teacher contract negotiations all across New York.
However, The Buffalo News editorial criticizing Elia’s decision as being wrong was apparently based on the editorial board’s assumption it was made because of Paladino’s comments toward President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. It’s too bad Commissioner Elia hadn’t cited this as the reason. Of Buffalo’s 34,000 school children, many if not most, are black.
Paladino’s racist comments are bigoted and despicable. How can a person truly serve a community when he despises those very same people? This is not the first time Paladino was “caught” making racist statements toward the black community. This man has no business serving a school district whether voted in or not.
Thank you Commissioner Elia for doing what was morally correct.
