An auction of paintings that made a dead soldier's sister cry

An auction isn't supposed to make you cry, but Debbie Lamby Jenkins couldn't help wiping the tears Sunday as old neighbors and strangers showed up to an auction of her brother's paintings.

Chuck Lamby of Derby was 23 when he was killed in Vietnam. She was 11.

The amateur water colors her brother had painted stayed in her attic since then, but she recently decided to auction them to raise money for Wounded Warriors and the Evans Art Guild. Nearly $1,700 was contributed.

"I was very emotional," she said.

She saw a cousin she had not seen in 40  years, as well as other veterans who never met her brother, but knew a comrade in arms. Several people outbid others, only to present the painting to the losing bidder.

"It was just overwhelming," Jenkins said.
