SERMAK OFM Conv., Fr. Ronald

Sermak OFM Conv. - Fr. Ronald Fr. Ronald (Henry) Sermak, OFM Conv. was born in Lackawanna, NY, on January 1, 1934 and died on August 20, 2017 at Mercy Nursing Facility in Lackawanna, NY. He was the son of Anthony and Sophie (nee Michalek) Sermak. In addition to his Franciscan family, his brother Anthony Sermak, Sr. and his wife Judy and his sister Alberta Dylik (wife of August Dylik), and many nieces and nephews survive him. After attending St. Francis High School, Athol Springs, NY, Friar Ronald entered the Franciscan Friars Conventual Novitiate in Mt. St Lawrence, Becket, MA in 1951, on August 15, 1952 he professed his Simple Vows and on August 15, 1955, he professed his Solemn Vows. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Michael Cathedral, Springfield, MA on May 28, 1960. He received a J.C. L. in Canon Law from The Catholic University of America in 1962. He and Fr. Donald Kos produced the first English Ordo for the Conventuals in 1970, a task that was theirs for 14 years, Fr. Ronald was first assigned to Archbishop Curley High School, Baltimore, MD in 1962 as Master of Clerics and remained there for ten years. In the ten years from 1972 to 1982 he served as Associate Pastor at Corpus Christi, Parish, Buffalo, NY; St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Athol Springs, NY St. Adalbert Parish, Elmhurst, NY St. Stanislaus Parish, Chicopee, MA; St. Stanislaus Parish, Chelsea, MA. From 1982 to 1988 he became Pastor of St Louis Parish in Portland, ME. In 1988, he became Chaplain to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, Hamburg NY until 2003. Because of declining health he moved to St. Maximilian Kolbe Friary, Athol Springs NY to assist, as he was able, with the Fr. Justin Rosary Hour. In October 2011, Father Ronald entered Mercy Nursing Facility at Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna, NY. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2017, from 4 -7:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 4263 St. Francis Drive, Hamburg, NY 14075 concluding with a 7:00 p.m. Franciscan Wake Service. On Friday, August 25, 2017, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a 9:00 a.m. visitation. Interment will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery Cheektowaga.
