The woman found shot to death in her Cheektowaga apartment has been identified as Diona McCall, 29, police said.
McCall's sister found her dead shortly before 8 a.m. Monday morning in the Sierra Drive apartment.
McCall was found on the first floor of her apartment at 33 Sierra. Her 5-year-old daughter was found upstairs and was apparently uninjured.
"She was a very good mother," said Doris Queener, McCall's aunt.
Detectives interviewed a person of interest late Monday, but the person was released, according to police.
Two Cheektowaga police officers in patrol cars were stationed outside McCall's apartment Tuesday. One officer said they were guarding the crime scene and waiting for detectives to return.
"Cheektowaga Police continue to look into all possibilities and conduct a thorough investigation with the aid of the Erie County District Attorney's Office," the department said in an emailed statement.
Two neighbors who live near McCabe said they did not know the woman and rarely saw her. Each described the Cedar Grove Heights neighborhood located in the Pine Hill section of Cheektowaga as quiet.
Cedar Grove Heights was established in 1946 to provide housing for employees of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. facility located nearby on Genesee Street.
