POWERS - Richard On August 5, 2017, retired Buffalo Firefighter Richard Powers passed away in Oldsmar, Florida. At his side was his wife of 67 years, Mary (Barnett) Powers. Richard was blessed by Father Baker on the day he was born in 1931. Possibly that is one of the reasons he grew into a wonderful man who was cherished by his friends and family. He proudly attended South Park High where he developed a love for baseball. Immediately after graduation he chose to embark on a life dedicated to protecting and serving. First he served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Lake Champlain during the Korean War and then as a dedicated firefighter for the City of Buffalo. He continued to protect and serve his family until his final day at the age of 86. Richard was born into a firefighting family. His father and grandfather were both City of Buffalo Firefighters. Aside from being a fireman Richard loved to golf, putter in the garage, watch the Bills and the Sabres and spend time with his tight knit family. He also enjoyed frequent trips to his beloved city of Buffalo as often as he could manage them. Although health problems forced him into a warmer climate he remained a Buffalo Guy through and through. Mourning him on this day are his wife, Mary; brother, Thomas Powers (Joy Whalen Powers); daughter, Gail Powers; son, Dean (Lynn) Powers, his grandchildren, Richard and Lindsey Pawlak, Eric Powers and Shannon Powers; and his great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Victoria Pawlak. Welcoming him home are his parents Joseph and Madeline Powers; grandparents Frederick and Louise Monroe and Edmund and Kathleen Powers; son-in-law Frederick Pawlak; his mother and father in-law, Norman and Clara Barnett; and two sisters-in-law, Norma June Barnett Tanner (Merle "Bub" Tanner) and Bonnie Kay Barnett; and scores of family and friends that have gone on before him. A celebration of Richard's life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, August 19th at Moss Feaster Funeral Home, 1320 Main Street, Dunedin, FL 34698. A gathering of friends will be held an hour prior to services from 12 pm to 1 pm. Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida on Monday, August 21st at 2:30 pm.
