Tin Can Sailors need help searching for relatives of USS Juneau sailor

Ahoy, Tin Can Sailors Association volunteers, who just completed an annual pilgrimage to polish the USS The Sullivans at Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, are seeking help to locate the family of World War II sailor Jerry Reilly.

Reilly, of Buffalo, died aboard the USS Juneau when it was sunk. The five Sullivan brothers were also on that doomed ship at the battle of Guadalcanal on Nov. 13, 1942. In honor of the brothers, the retired destroyer at Canalside was named for them.

The Tin Can Sailors and members of the USS The Sullivans Association hope to make contact with any local relatives of Reilly, who attended South Park High School, so that they can invite them to their reunion from Sept. 20 to Sept. 24 at the Millennium Hotel in Cheektowaga.

"The 75th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Juneau and the loss of the five Sullivan brothers and 700 shipmates including Reilly is on Nov. 13, and we want to include Reilly's relatives in our ceremony honoring those sailors," said Hal Burke, chairman of the reunion.

Anyone related to Reilly or knows of their whereabouts, Burke said, is asked to call him at (708) 387-7779.
