It'll be hot and muggy enough today to make the shores of Lake Erie an attractive place to seek relief.
But forecasters at the National Weather Service caution the water might be a dangerous place to be today.
The weather service issued a beach hazards statement cautioning that between noon and about 11 p.m. "strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions" are expected on the beaches in Erie and Chautauqua counties.
"This means life-threatening waves and currents are expected," the weather service stated. "Stay out of the water and stay away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwalls."
Temperatures across the Buffalo Niagara region could peak in the mid 80s today with high dewpoints making it feel even warmer.
Southwest winds gusting over 30 mph are expected today, especially during the afternoon hours, the forecast shows.
The weather service also posted a small craft advisory for the shoreline of Lake Erie. Boaters are cautioned waves up to six feet are possible.
