Letter: We must be vigilant; it could happen again

We must be vigilant; it could happen again

As a child of Holocaust survivors, there are no words that can accurately express my feelings regarding what took place in Charlottesville this past weekend.

My parents came to the United States, with nothing except a dream to live in a country that allowed them rights that they were denied because of their beliefs. Their love for America, its values and freedoms were expressed to me every day of my life. They told me of the atrocities that they endured during the Nazi regime and the difficulties of life during the rise of Hitler. They were lucky to get out but they lost their entire families in concentration camps.

If you look back to the 1930s, Hitler came to power as chancellor. He later became dictator using various methods that seem to be like what has been happening over the past two years, during Donald Trump’s campaign and now as president.

We must be vigilant in holding our elected officials accountable. We cannot put our heads in the sand and think it couldn’t happen again. It could. I am glad my parents are not able to see that history could be repeating itself in their beloved United States of America.
