This is the part of the calendar when Lake Erie's waters near Buffalo are typically the warmest of the season.

Except for this year.

After starting out the summer with record warmth, the lake waters have cooled off over the last several weeks.

Driven by cooler temperatures and more precipitation, Lake Erie is six degrees cooler than both this date a year ago and its peak temperature for this summer, which occurred in mid-July, data shows.

Tuesday's lake temperature at Buffalo was 72 degrees.

It has been decreasing since this summer's peak of 78 degrees on July 15 and 16 and has not been cooler this year since a 71-degree reading was logged June 20.

Coincidentally, this year's June 20 reading was the highest lake temperature on record in Buffalo for the date.
